Don Primiano, now 84 years old, started Don's Art Shop in 1955. Despite opinions that his business would never get off the ground, his business had an incredible flow of local artists and those who wished to become artists. He taught numerous classes, offered a wonderful array of art supplies, and offered a comfortable setting for people to come, even if it was just to visit. Don Primiano is an icon in Warren. His outgoing personality and friendly approach has won him hundreds of friends. He grew up in the Italian north end of Warren on Union Street. After serving his country for two-and-a-half years during WWII, Mr. Primiano attended the Rhode Island School of Design during the evenings under the G.I. Bill of Rights. Mr. Primiano says art has always been in his blood. "I did drawings and cartoons when I was 7 years old," he says. "Art has been a lifelong dream. It's been wonderful." Don Primiano still resides at the Art Shop and paints every day, still fulfilling his dream.

Don's paintings cover a wide spectrum of syles, personalized visions to social issues. "Sometimes referred to as a 'sophisticated primitive', Primiano has enjoyed an independent, old-world, bohemian life-style, always surrounded by close friends and followers. His work, however, truly reflects an optimistic warmth and enthusiasm throughout," Angelo Marinosci, writer for Motif magazine.
