Sat the 7th THE BLACKOUT
THE BLACKOUT: A GRAND SHOWCASE OF UP-AND-COMING TALENT AND CREATIVE
COUNTERCULTURE LIFESTYLE BRANDS POISED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD
Providence’s Budding Creative Lifestyle Brand Organizes A Showcase of Creativity to Support the Philanthropic Community Projects of West Side Arts.
Providence, RI (NOv 2009) – How sick and tired are you of talking about the Recession? The team of inspired minds that consitutes the company aptly named crud (cq), which stands for create. read. update. design., are already steps ahead of you. Carlo Abueg, the brand’s creative director, explores a theoretical time period immediately following The Recession which he calls The Blackout. Are we all doomed to fail or will we rise up to our challenges and make the best possible scenario out of the current situation? Does the color black represent death and destruction or is the absence of light the foundational core of a new world?
To answer these questions, crud (cq) is producing and organizing an event on November 7, 2009 in Providence to explore the future through creative expression. The Blackout is a grand showcase of up-and-coming talents and brands poised to make a difference in local and international communities alike. The event will feature new visual work by a mix of local and international artists such as A-BOY (cq), Monique Langlois, Scarlett Genevieve Baily, Matthew Weissman, graffitti artist Jumbo, Damian David, Anti Design of Norway and Jonathan Calugi of Happy Lover’s Town. There will also be limited product displays by avant-garde brands such as Siwy Denim, I Love Ugly and Irregular Clothing. In keeping with the show’s theme, the duo of Project Gotham and DJs Ruckspin, Peter Jay and David LoPan will introduce new genres of music ranging from Techtonik Electro to indie-alternative hiphop.
Donations are encouraged to help support West Side Arts and their many philanthropic community projects such as the Laundry Love Project, an initiative to provide laundry services for Rhode Island’s homeless. Gift boxes provided by sponsors will be on sale at the event and proceeds will benefit the West Side Arts gallery.
The Blackout is supported by Narragansett Beer Co., Rhodia Notebooks, Asics Shoes and Staple Design. The doors will be open to the public between 8PM and midnight at West Side Arts Gallery (745 Westminster Street, Providence, RI). For more information and details about this event, visit www.crudmag.com/theblackout.

"The Art of War"
AN art exhibit on World War II Paintings and Drawings By Don Primiano
Opening reception APRIL 25th Sat 6-10pm
Show Running till MAy 25th Memorial day
AXIS SALLY 30x40 oil painting
Don Primiano, now 84 years old, started Don's Art Shop in 1955. Despite opinions that his business would never get off the ground, his business had an incredible flow of local artists and those who wished to become artists. He taught numerous classes, offered a wonderful array of art supplies, and offered a comfortable setting for people to come, even if it was just to visit. Don Primiano is an icon in Warren. His outgoing personality and friendly approach has won him hundreds of friends. He grew up in the Italian north end of Warren on Union Street. After serving his country for two-and-a-half years during WWII, Mr. Primiano attended the Rhode Island School of Design during the evenings under the G.I. Bill of Rights. Mr. Primiano says art has always been in his blood. "I did drawings and cartoons when I was 7 years old," he says. "Art has been a lifelong dream. It's been wonderful." Don Primiano still resides at the Art Shop and paints every day, still fulfilling his dream.
Don's paintings cover a wide spectrum of syles, personalized visions to social issues. "Sometimes referred to as a 'sophisticated primitive', Primiano has enjoyed an independent, old-world, bohemian life-style, always surrounded by close friends and followers. His work, however, truly reflects an optimistic warmth and enthusiasm throughout," Angelo Marinosci, writer for Motif magazine.
